Yoga by the Pool

Hello.

Hello! My name is Sofia

I was born in Caminha, Portugal and in the last two decades I have literally moved around the world. My career path gave me the privilege of living in several countries: Botswana, Denmark, Netherlands, Mozambique, Spain and South Africa and visiting many more. I just returned home recently and I am loving it!

My journey with health

I have always considered myself a healthy person; in my last job of 16 years I only took 3 days of sick leave, which proves my point. However, if I am totally honest, for many years now my health has not been 100%. It probably all started in my 30’s, a routine visit to my GP lead to an endoscopy that led to heavy medication prescriptions to eliminate the H. Pylori bacteria in my stomach. The rest was story and, since that moment my digestive problems have never stopped (e.g. food intolerances, leaky gut, IBS among others). To all the digestive problems soon skin problems were added (e.g. rosacea). I tried to get help from different doctors and specialists in Portugal and South Africa but no one was able to provide me with solutions. For years I took pharmaceuticals that left me each time weaker. One day, I saw a food intolerance test ad and out of desperation I took it. The results came back and confirmed that I was intolerant to more than 20 types of foods. I decided to take all those foods out of my diet and in a few weeks, I was able to see some improvements.  I continued avoiding those foods for a few years and my symptoms almost all disappeared (digestive and skin). I probably was able to recover 90% of my wellness and that became my new normal. This was the first time I experienced the power that diet could have in our overall health.

Fast forward 10 years, now in my 40’s, and my life suffered a change of 360 degrees. I decided to adopt a little boy by myself and I am not sure I fully knew what I was getting into. Until that point my life had been focused on my management career with, lots of high demands, but I thoroughly enjoyed each minute of it. My workaholic nature was well suit to my career choice, my diligence of working evenings and weekends always paid off. I guess that the high levels of stress I was under, combined with years of poor diet, no exercise and no rest together with the fact that I was aging (my body reserves were beginning to be depleted) was an explosive combination ready to detonate at any moment. My little boy became the trigger, he brought someone that was merely surviving to a breaking point stage in a few years. I became exhausted physically and mentally, the joy of my work and of living almost disappeared. I quit my job and returned home to have some rest. It was no surprise, when I was diagnosed with a mental burnout. For the first time, I fully understood the value of health not from an abstract perspective but from what I was experiencing in my own skin. I was no longer immortal and the signs were all over my face (literally): I had no energy, I felt tired from morning to evening. I was border lining obesity, I felt aches and pains throughout my body. For years I had had high levels of cholesterol (the doctors tried to medicate me several times) and they were getting worse by the minute, my digestive problems returned, I had adult acne, and the worst was that my brain couldn’t function as it used to. I was a mess! I became certain that if I did not change things, I would not be here to see my child grow-up.

I used the little energy I had to look for the latest health-related data and to reflect on the choices I had made that lead me to be where I was. I also looked for answers in what I could do to treat myself. I stumbled on the concepts of functional and natural medicine, I attended a few conferences online. I was able to implement some of the recommendations and I could feel how beneficial they were. After some time, my energy and brain function returned and that allowed me to learn further. I couldn’t stop, I was in awe with all the new information and how different health was being approached compared with allopathic medicine (mainstream medicine). I decided to invest in formally educating myself, I became a health coach with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York. And I began my studies in Nutritional Therapy with International Integrative Educational Institute.

No matter what I was formally studying (from modern functional medicine to ancient Ayurveda), the books I was reading, the conferences I was attending … again and again experts were talking about the same pillars of health.

The personal journey that had begun with me trying to recovery my own health, had now turned into a passion. As I began mastering my own health I made it my mission to help others do the same. And that is the reason I started this practice!

Health Outcomes

In summary, in case you are wondering where I am now in my health journey.

- Lost 18 kg with no need to go into the gym (not that I have any issue with gyms). I have a few kg to lose to reach my targeted weight but slowly and in an effortless manner I will get there;

- After 20 years of high cholesterol levels, my values are now normal (from 257 to 172);

- Digestive issues resolved;

- Adult acne gone;

- Energy levels are high and chronic fatigue disappeared;

- I sleep like a baby and have been able to dream again (or at least remember what I was dreaming during the night);

- I used to believe I was close to menopause; but my cycle is back to normal;

- My brain is fully function (no brain fog, no difficulty recalling memories, no absent mindedness).

And I am loving life & my new regained health!
